What If You’re Not a Dopamine Dresser? Introducing GABA Dressing

We hear a lot about dopamine dressing — bold colours, loud prints, playful silhouettes, and “feel-good” fashion. It’s a popular concept, and for good reason. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter associated with reward, motivation, and pleasure. Dressing in a way that activates those responses can genuinely lift your mood.

But far fewer people talk about the opposite end of the spectrum — what I call GABA dressing.

GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is a calming neurotransmitter. It soothes the nervous system, reduces overstimulation, and helps us return to baseline. Substances like valerian, ashwagandha, and medications like diazepam (Valium) work by increasing GABA activity.

So what does that have to do with personal style?

In my work as an image consultant, I’ve found that while some people thrive in dopamine-charged aesthetics, others need the visual equivalent of GABA. These individuals feel most regulated — and most themselves — when surrounded by muted tones, fluid silhouettes, soft textures, and a sense of visual serenity.

Personally, I’m one of them. I don’t need my clothing to energise me — I need it to quiet the noise. When my outfits are gentle, cohesive, and texturally soft, I feel centred. Not “dressed up,” but aligned.

Many of my clients have expressed something similar. They don’t want contrast or colourblocking — they want clothes that whisper.

Signs You Might Be a GABA Dresser:

• You feel overwhelmed by bright colours or harsh prints

• You gravitate toward soft fabrics and unfussy silhouettes

• You often feel overstimulated by trend cycles or maximalism

• You dress to feel at peace, not excited

• You like harmony in your wardrobe — not contrast

There’s nothing wrong with dopamine dressing — but it’s not the only way to feel good in your clothes. Some of us don’t want a style “high.” We want quiet. Comfort. Safety. Softness.

What about you?

Do you find yourself craving calm in your wardrobe?

Or are you someone who feels best when your clothes give you a little spark?

This is brilliant. Bright colors make my eyes hurt. I fit the description for a gaba dresser but I never heard it called that before.
